Doctor's Orders: Get Involved In Your Own Good Health

Carolyn Dean, MD, ND

Many patients adopt natural medicine practices due to a fear of allopathic medicine’s primary drugs and surgery approach. Patients often feel they have to accept one OR the other forms of medicine. Allopathic medicine does nothing to dissuade people from this notion and has set out from the 1800’s to create a monopoly that demonizes natural medicine and those that practice it.

In the health freedom movement it’s this monopoly that we are fighting in order to have freedom of choice in today’s health care. Moreover, we want to be able to use the best of allopathic medicine and the best of natural medicine.

So, even though I tell you to take responsibility for your own health care by eating good food and taking natural supplements, what if you need surgery or a specific medicine or some medical tests that only an MD can prescribe? Will your medical doctor speak to your naturopath, homeopath, acupuncturist or nutritionist? Not likely. Because of the monopoly in allopathic medicine there is no free flow of information between your health care team. And that’s just not right.

That’s why it’s so important that you’re involved and become an active participant in your own good health by demanding access to all forms of medicine. But it also means you have to “know the enemy” and have some understanding of their motivation.

In 2005, I wrote the book Death by Modern Medicine that presented evidence that medicine is first and foremost a business. The hard truth is, if someone interferes with that business they are blacklisted. In my book and all over the internet you can follow the trials and tribulations of Drs. Gerson, Burzinski and Gonzolas in cancer therapy; Dr. Andrew Wakefield in autism; Dr. David Healy in the world of anti-depressants or even the attack on me by the sugar industry in Canada that eventually led to the Ontario licensing body stealing my license to practice medicine.

What’s wrong with doctors, you ask? Why aren’t they open to alternatives? When I was in medical school we were taught that if you didn’t learn it in your 5-8 years of medical training then it’s not important or it doesn’t exist or it’s quackery. That’s where it begins for doctors. That’s why most doctors can’t tell you what you want to know about nutrition or how to stay healthy because they didn’t learn it in medical school. Therefore it can’t be important.

In medical school we were taught that you can get all your nutrients in your food…and that’s what doctors tell their patients. Some of these patients have the equivalent of a PhD in nutrition knowledge, yet they are treated like children. My clients describe to me the eye rolling, the tisking and the derisive sounds as their doctor tries to intimidate them into taking their prescribed drugs and never answering important wellness questions.

Again, let me remind you: An allopathic doctor is only trained to diagnose disease with invasive and expensive tests and treat disease symptoms with drugs or surgery. That’s why it’s so important that you become involved in your own health care. For example, when you take a plane, remember what the flight attendant says at the beginning of the flight? When an oxygen mask appears, first put yours on so you will be better able to help your children and those that require assistance.

That means first and foremost you have to take care of yourself and get yourself healthy. Maybe you’re just too exhausted and overwhelmed to think about changing your whole diet, exercising an hour a day and taking steps to de-stress your life. So, I suggest you start with baby steps. This may surprise you, but I ask all my clients and readers of my blog to begin by taking magnesium.

Magnesium is the most needed and most important member of the family of minerals that our body requires. It’s also deficient in the diets of 80% of the population. It helps boost your energy during the day and helps you sleep at night. You can learn more about magnesium in my book The Magnesium Miracle. Magnesium alone gives you enough well being to tackle a change in lifestyle.

After you have magnesium under your belt, I recommend looking at your digestion. If you have symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, read my book IBS for Dummies and learn how your diet may be the culprit. Next, I recommend reading my book, The Yeast Connection and Women’s Health and taking the selfdiagnostic questionnaire to see if you have one of the most common causes of body-wide inflammation. Treating yeast overgrowth with a sugar-free, wheatfree and dairy-free diet, probiotics and natural anti-fungals can cause a miraculous turn about in your health.

Along the way you will find that you have enough energy to help educate your friends and family about good health practices. You may even tell your doctor what you are doing and see if he or she is interested in learning more. There are plenty of ways you can get involved with Health Freedom through HealthKeepers Alliance. But even if you aren’t active in the fight, just know that simply reading health books, eating organic food, taking high quality supplements and anti-fungal treatments improves your health and lets the statisticians know that alternative medicine is alive and well. And that knowledge scares the socks right off the allopathic medicine monopoly because to them, money is more important than truthful health information.
